Background of the Study
Crude oil spills are a major environmental hazard, with long-lasting impacts on both ecosystems and human health. Kogi State, located in central Nigeria, has seen increasing environmental degradation due to the activities of oil extraction and transportation across the country, particularly in the Niger Delta region (Ibrahim & Adebayo, 2023). Although Kogi State is not an oil-producing region, the transportation of crude oil through pipelines and other infrastructure has led to occasional spills, with severe consequences for local communities.

Research indicates that crude oil spills can have detrimental effects on human health, especially through exposure to toxic chemicals like benzene, toluene, and other hydrocarbons, which are known carcinogens and can cause respiratory, skin, and neurological disorders (Omokaro et al., 2024). In Kogi State, communities living near spill sites are particularly vulnerable to these health risks due to limited access to healthcare and information on safety measures (Ajayi et al., 2024). This study seeks to assess the health impacts of crude oil spills on human populations in Kogi State, particularly focusing on respiratory issues, skin diseases, and long-term chronic conditions such as cancer.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the known risks of crude oil spills to human health, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on the specific health consequences for residents of Kogi State. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the health effects of oil spills on local communities in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of crude oil spills on human health in Kogi State.
  2. To identify the most common health problems associated with oil spills in the affected populations.
  3. To recommend strategies for mitigating health risks associated with crude oil spills in Kogi State.

Research Questions

  1. How do crude oil spills affect the health of residents in Kogi State?
  2. What are the most prevalent health problems in communities affected by crude oil spills in Kogi State?
  3. What interventions can reduce the health risks associated with crude oil spills in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Residents of Kogi State living near oil spill sites are more likely to experience health problems related to crude oil exposure.
  2. Crude oil spills in Kogi State significantly contribute to respiratory and skin diseases in affected communities.
  3. Implementing safety measures and environmental clean-up activities will reduce the health risks posed by crude oil spills in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on communities in Kogi State affected by crude oil spills, particularly those along major transportation routes. Limitations include challenges in accessing affected populations and potential biases in self-reported health data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Crude Oil Spill: The release of petroleum products into the environment, often resulting from accidents or pipeline ruptures.
  • Environmental Health Risks: Health hazards caused by environmental factors such as pollution, contamination, and exposure to toxic substances.
  • Hydrocarbons: Organic compounds found in crude oil that can cause toxic effects when individuals are exposed to them.
